Zero Waste? Low Waste? Sustainable?

Zero Waste? Low Waste? Sustainable?

Being Zero waste, low waste or even just sustainable seems to come with a stigma that you cannot have plastic in the home let alone buy plastic !

This totally isn’t the case!

An important thing to remember while on your journey to low waste is that there is no set rules, it’s really just about doing your best and making swaps where you can.

Low waste looks different for everyone and the key is to try your best under your own circumstances.

Low waste isn’t about only buying in bulk, avoiding all plastic items or having matching food storage.

It could be buying the reduced priced food that’s going to expire soon at the supermarket to avoid it just going into the bin or buying those single items like bananas that are loose off a bunch.

A incredible way to reduce food waste is to meal plan for your food shop so you are only buying what you need for you and the family.

Remember not to beat yourself up over food waste, it happens! One way to stop that food scraps ending up in landfill is to create a compost for all your food scraps or if you don’t have the space for one, ask in your local community Facebook groups if anyone has a compost bin or chickens that would love some scraps.

The most common question on everyone’s lips when trying to make the switch to a more sustainable lifestyle “ So what do I do with all the plastic I have in my home already?”

The answer? Use it up!

The best thing you can do with your plastic items is use them until they cant be used no more and if you really don’t want to keep using them, another great option is to donate them!

Ask a friend if they have any use for that box of zip lock bags that are no longer going to be used and save them having to buy another box of zip lock bags.

You can post almost anything up on Facebook market place now days which is another awesome way to find new homes for your plastic items including all those 15c plastic bags from the supermarkets.

There is so many great switches you can make to reduce your footprint and lower your household waste, follow us on our Instagram @Carystheworld for more great tips and tricks!
